Niko Moon - ‘SUMMER DON'T GO’

Release Date: November 22nd, 2024

EP: THESE ARE THE NIGHTS

Songwriters: Niko Moon, Danny Majic & Danny J

Producer: Danny Majic & Danny J

The Background:

Just as the weather started turning colder and the Autumnal blues began to take hold, Niko Moon delivered a welcome care package full to the brim with sunshine and serotonin.

One of the stand-outs from the four-song project, ‘SUMMER DON'T GO’, finds Moon touching on that relatable feeling of wishing the sun-kissed warmth and beachside bliss of the hottest months would never dissipate, conveyed through the tale of a summer romance.

The Sound:

Ever since his seismic, trap-infused 2021 hit, ‘GOOD TIME’, Niko Moon has been synonymous with an unwaveringly positive, optimistic brand of music, with the ‘BETTER DAYS’ singer-songwriter aptly donning himself country's ‘Happy Cowboy’.

The sonic texture of ‘SUMMER DON'T GO’ epitomises this radiant, energising ambience, with Niko Moon's charismatic rasp combining with a vibrant, 808-driven instrumental.

The Meaning:

“We were on fire for the first 3 months
Summer on your skin yeah we were falling in love
Riding them waves till the moon rolled in
Telling myself I never want it to end
September's coming fast
Pour up another glass
Cause I'm trying to make it last”

‘SUMMER DON'T GO’ revolves around the yearning for summer to stretch on forever, with Niko Moon stepping into the shoes of a protagonist who is trying to hold onto a fleeting romance.

It feels as though the narrator is crooning longingly to the personification of summer, rather than a specific person, as he desperately tries to stave off the looming September chill.

“Summer don't go without a barefoot night
Summer don't go without tequila and lime
Summer don't go without some bait on a string
Summer don't go without a summer fling
All this salt in the air
All this ain't got a care
Has got me thinking summer don't go
Summer don't go nowhere”

The titular lyric is a witty piece of wordplay, with Niko Moon listing all the things summer is the perfect companion to, such as a night of dancing, a tequila cocktail and a laidback day of fishing (a potential callback to his eye-catching cover of the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band's ‘FISHIN’ IN THE DARK’, which featured on his 2024 album, BETTER DAYS).

Niko Moon outlines that summer goes so well with all these experiences that he's wondering whether, as long as he keeps enjoying himself and maintaining his breezy outlook on life, he might be able to make summer a permanent state of mind, instead of a temporary high. He transitions from the use of ‘SUMMER DON'T GO’ to refer to the season being an ideal pairing with the aforementioned joys, to then switch the meaning and conclude that maybe ‘SUMMER DON'T GO‘ nowhere.

“Ever since you started drifting away
Five o'clock somewhere nah it just ain't the same
Tan lines fading
Waves keep breaking
Just like my heart so won't you stay”

Niko Moon appears to tip his cap to a few of his favourite tropically-minded tracks here, such as ‘Drift Away’ by Uncle Kracker and one of the all-time greatest summer country anthems, Alan Jackson and Jimmy Buffett's ‘It's Five O'Clock Somewhere’. Moon notices the signs that the season is drawing to a close, such as the disappearing tan lines, before likening the breaking waves to his breaking heart. The Happy Cowboy concludes with a plea for his lover - and summer - to stay for good.

What has Niko Moon said about ‘SUMMER DON'T GO’?

Ahead of the release of his THESE ARE THE NIGHTS EP, Niko Moon explained the core theme that ties all four tracks together, “This EP is about slowing down and soaking in the things that make life sweet. These songs were written during my THESE ARE THE DAYS tour, and they reflect that energy of being on the road and the appreciation I have for the simple moments. I’m so excited for fans to hear these tracks and connect with the messages behind them”.
